About Hirafu Station
北海道・倶知安町にある比羅夫駅（ひらふえき）は、JR北海道・函館本線の小さな無人駅です。駅番号は S24。
1904年（明治37年）に開業して以来、
100年以上にわたり、旅人・地域の暮らし・スキー観光の移り変わりを静かに見守ってきました。
季節ごとに景色が大きく変わる自然に囲まれた駅で、冬の深い静けさ、春の桜、夏のルピナス、秋の紅葉と、四季がくっきり体験できます。
現在は1面1線のホームだけを持つ、とてもシンプルなローカル駅。その素朴さこそが比羅夫駅の魅力で、旅の途中にふと「時間を忘れる」ような特別な空気を感じられます。
Hirafu Station (S24), located in Kutchan, Hokkaido, is a small unmanned station on the JR Hakodate Main Line. Since opening in 1904, the station has quietly watched over more than a century of travel, local life, and the growth of ski tourism. Surrounded by rich nature, the scenery changes dramatically with each season — the deep silence of winter, cherry blossoms in spring, lupines in summer, and vivid autumn colors. Today, the station consists of a simple single-track platform. This simplicity is part of Hirafu Station’s charm, offering a unique, peaceful atmosphere where travelers often feel as if time slows down for a moment.
駅の宿ひらふとの関係
Connection with Eki-no-Yado Hirafu
この駅の旧事務室を宿として使っているのが 「駅の宿ひらふ」 です。
駅舎そのものを宿泊施設として活用する例は日本でも極めて珍しく、
“駅に泊まれる宿” として鉄道ファンの憧れの場所として知られています。
実は、この宿が誕生した背景には、
初代オーナー・大倉さんの忘れられない情景 がありました。
ある冬の日、比羅夫駅のホームに立つと、
雪原にぽつんと佇む駅舎の姿があまりにも美しく、
「ここに泊まれたらどんなに素敵だろう」と強く心を動かされたのです。
その想いを胸に、大倉さんは札幌の国鉄に
「無人駅を借りることはできますか？」 と電話をかけました。
しかし当時、無人駅を一般に貸し出す前例はなく、
さらに国鉄分割民営化を目前に控えていたため、
返事はその場ではもらえず、結論は保留となりました。
それでも諦めずに数週間待ち続け、
民営化後の JR北海道が発足した4月に再度問い合わせたところ、
驚くほどあっさりと「駅舎の貸し出しOK」の返事が返ってきました。
しかも、改札や待合室の清掃、ホームの雪かきなど
「駅としての業務を行う必要は一切ありません」とのこと。
つまり本当に “小さな駅舎そのものを借りる” だけでよかったのです。
こうして誕生した「駅の宿ひらふ」は、
比羅夫駅と共に年月を歩んできた “生きた歴史” を持つ宿となりました。
ホーム横にはのちにログコテージ（離れ）も建てられ、かつて駅務室だった空間で過ごすひとときは、まるで
「鉄道の時間に泊まる」 ような特別な体験です。
Eki-no-Yado Hirafu is a unique guesthouse created inside the former station office of Hirafu Station.
Staying in an actual railway station building is extremely rare in Japan,
and the lodge has long been known among railway enthusiasts as
“a place where you can sleep inside a real station.” The origin of this lodge comes from an unforgettable moment experienced by its founder, Mr. Okura. One winter day, he saw the small station standing quietly in the snow, a view so beautiful that he thought: “How wonderful it would be if someone could stay here.”
Moved by that feeling, he called the former Japanese National Railways (JNR) in Sapporo and asked:
“Is it possible to rent an unmanned station?” At the time, there had been no precedent for renting out a station building, and with the upcoming privatization of JNR, he received no clear answer and was told to wait. Weeks passed. Then in April, just after JR Hokkaido was officially established, he tried calling again — and this time, the answer came immediately: “Yes, you can rent the station building.” Surprisingly, he was also told he would not be responsible for any station duties: no ticket gate cleaning, no waiting-room maintenance, and no clearing snow from the platform. He could simply borrow the station building itself. Thus, Eki-no-Yado Hirafu was born —
a guesthouse that has grown together with Hirafu Station, carrying a piece of living railway history.
Today, a separate log cottage stands beside the platform,
and spending time inside what once served as the station office feels like “staying inside the story of railways.”

1904年 – 北海道鉄道の駅として開業
1907年 – 国有化、国鉄に編入
（1964年 – 「狩太町」が町名・駅名を“ニセコ”へ変更）
1974年 – 貨物取り扱い終了
1982年 – 無人駅化
1987年 – 国鉄分割民営化に伴いJR北海道へ。初代オーナーが駅舎を借り受け、「駅の宿ひらふ」 がスタート
1995年 – 二代目が営みを継承。以降30年にわたり、宿の運営と建物の維持・修繕を担う
2007年 – 駅ナンバリング導入（S24）
2022年 – スキーリゾートエリアの旧「字山田」が正式に 「ニセコひらふ」 に名称変更
2025年 – 三代目へ継承。この場所の営みを次の時代へ引き継ぐ
■ C62蒸気機関車の黄金時代
函館本線（特に山線）では、日本最大・最速の旅客用蒸気機関車C62形 が力強く走り抜けていました。
重い客車を牽引するために 2台が並走する「C62重連」 は、今でも語り継がれる伝説的な鉄道シーンです。

1907 – Nationalized into JNR
（1964 – The former town of Kaributo proposed renaming both the town and station to “Niseko.” After gaining strong support in a resident survey and reaching agreement with Kutchan, the town officially adopted the name “Niseko” on October 1）
1974 – Freight services discontinued
1982 – Became an unmanned station
1987 – Transferred to JR Hokkaido after the JNR privatization. The former station office was rented and transformed into“Eki-no-Yado Hirafu”, the now-famous station guesthouse
1995 – Stewardship passed to the second operator, who continued the operation for the next 30 years.
2007 – Station numbering introduced (S24)
2022 – The ski resort area formerly known as “Aza Yamada” was officially renamed “Niseko Hirafu”
2025 – Stewardship passed to the third operator, carrying the place into a new chapter.
■ The Golden Era of the C62 Steam Locomotives
On the Hakodate Main Line—especially the mountainous section—the C62,
Japan’s largest and fastest passenger steam locomotive, once dominated the rails.
Its dramatic double-heading operations remain one of the most iconic railway scenes in Japan.
駅名の由来
Name Origin
「比羅夫（ひらふ）」という名称は、
飛鳥時代にこの地域にゆかりがあったとされる武人
阿倍比羅夫（あべのひらふ） に由来すると言われています。
一方、北海道では、比羅夫駅の隣にある
昆布“kon-pu”（深くくぼんだ場所）ニセコ “nisey-ko-an-nupuri”（断崖のある山＝ニセコアンヌプリ）倶知安“ku-cha-an-nay”（流れが合流する川） をはじめ、多くの地名が先住民族アイヌの言葉に由来しています。その中で、古代日本の人物名に由来する「比羅夫」という名称は、この地域ではむしろ珍しい存在です。
アイヌ語地名が色濃く残る土地に、
日本古代史の名が重なることで生まれる独特の響き。
それが、この場所に特別な深みを与えています。
The name “Hirafu” is believed to come from Abe no Hirafu, a military leader from the Asuka period who was historically associated with this region.
In contrast, many place names in Hokkaido— including the stations adjacent to Hirafu, such as
Konbu, Niseko, and Kutchan—
are derived from the Ainu language, the language of the Indigenous Ainu people. Because of this, a name rooted in ancient Japanese history like Hirafu is actually quite rare in this area.
This unique mix of Ainu-derived place names and a Japanese historical figure
gives the region a distinctive cultural depth not often found elsewhere in Hokkaido.
現在の駅と周辺
The Station Today and Its Surroundings
比羅夫駅は利用者こそ多くありませんが、
その「静けさ」や「昔から変わらない風景」を求めて訪れる旅人も多い場所です。
北海道新幹線の延伸に伴い、この山線（長万部〜小樽間）は
将来的に廃線の予定 とされており、すでに乗降者数の少なさから
廃駅候補の一つ としても名前が挙がっています。
2026年4月には、同じ区間の 二股駅が廃駅 となる予定です。
ひらふスキーリゾートへ向かう直通バスはありませんが、
倶知安駅で乗り換えることでアクセス可能です。
ホームのすぐ向こうには深い森が広がり、
100年前と大きく変わらない北海道の原風景が今も残っています。
少し歩けば、
“蝦夷富士” 羊蹄山、清流日本一と称される尻別川 があり、
秋にはエゾシカに出会えることもあります。
あなたが今立っているこの場所は、
100年以上前からほとんど姿を変えずに、
北海道の“ゆっくりとした時間”が流れ続けている駅です。
Hirafu Station is no longer busy,
but many travelers visit precisely for its quiet atmosphere
and the nostalgic scenery that has changed very little over the past century. With the extension of the Hokkaido Shinkansen,
this mountain line (between Oshamanbe and Otaru) is scheduled to be closed in the future.
Due to its low number of passengers, Hirafu Station has also been listed as
a potential closure candidate.
In April 2026, Futamata Station, located on the same line, will officially be closed.
There is no direct bus to the Niseko Hirafu ski resort from this station,
but access is possible by transferring at Kutchan Station.
Beyond the platform, a quiet forest stretches out— a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for more than 100 years.
A short walk brings you to
Mt. Yotei (“Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido”)
and the Shiribetsu River, considered one of the cleanest rivers in Japan.
In autumn, it is common to see Ezo deer wandering nearby.
